Cullet Glass
Cullet glass is recycled glass, which is
run through a crusher. The resulting product can take the place
of pit run gravel used for backfill. We were lucky to be able to
obtain cullet glass from our local quarry. We found the product
as easy to work with as gravel and it compacted very nicely.
Many municipalities are using it for roadbeds
and as substrate for recreation
fields. In Australia cullet glass is being mixed into
concrete to take the place of sand. Contrary to what you might
think the edges of the glass are not sharp, you can take a
handful of cullet glass and rub it with your hands and not get
cut. When the cullet glass first arrived at the job site it
wasn’t very attractive. But as soon as the rain hit it and the
dirt washed off, the glass became a kaleidoscope of color and
light. Cullet glass would make a beautiful walkway or it can be
used to edge your garden as Tom St Louis does. He claims slugs
won’t crawl over it and the additional heat retention and light
refraction helps grow whopper tomatoes.
